Storm Damage Repairs After NJ Nor'easters

Nor'easters hammer Northern NJ every year. Here's the post-storm checklist: what to fix first, what can wait, and what to document for insurance.

HomeResources › Seasonal

First: document for insurance

Before you fix anything, take photos. Wide shots of the damage, close-ups of specific issues, and a date-time-visible photo of your phone showing the date. Most insurance claims fail because the homeowner cleaned up first. Get the photos before you touch anything.

Priority 1: water entry

Roof leaks, broken windows, and storm-door damage need to be stopped first — tarping a roof or boarding a window prevents the much bigger water-damage repair from compounding. We don't do roofing, but we can board windows, replace storm doors, and seal entry points immediately.

Priority 2: structural and safety

Damaged railings, fallen fence sections, broken gates that won't close. Safety issues first — if your dog can get out or someone can fall off the deck, fix those before the water-damage cleanup.

Priority 3: water-damaged drywall and ceilings

Water-stained ceilings need to be opened up to dry out the cavity above (otherwise mold) and then repaired. A ceiling with a brown stain is not just cosmetic — it's a sign water sat in the drywall. Drywall water repair is $275–$600 per area.

Priority 4: exterior cleanup and seal

Power-washing deck debris, re-staining where the storm stripped finish, replacing wind-damaged trim, fixing storm-door closers. These can wait a week or two but shouldn't sit through another rainstorm.

Working with your insurance

Most policies require you to make 'reasonable efforts' to prevent further damage. That means a temporary fix counts and is reimbursable — keep all receipts. Your full repair quote can come later. We're happy to coordinate with adjusters.
